GREETING SPEECH PDF Print E-mail
Directorate of Policies for Equal Opportunities and Family wants to introduce some of
its activities in order to fulfill its mission, to design and develop policies, legislation and to implement programs which promote gender equality in society, preventing and combating violence against women including domestic violence, protection from discrimination due to sexual orientation and the protection of children’s rights in accordance with current situation and international obligations.

Government of Albania has decided the gender equality issues in the heart of its agenda, considering that economic and social development of country cannot be understood without treatment and concrete achievements, especially in promoting gender issues and making them part of all country’s development policies.

Gender equality is a fundamental civil right, a common value of European Union countries, and therefore a necessary condition for integration and implementation of goals for employment and social cohesion of the SAA, which Albania signed in June 2006.

In Albania, women have achieved high levels in their education, progress in labor market and public life. However, gender equality remains a concern for society, placing more women in the dilemma between raising children or career development, due to lack of adjustment in the schedules, social services, and other obstacles that lead to traditional gender stereotypes and patriarchal mentality of society.

Albanian society has become more sensitive increasing role of woman in all spheres, especially her representation in political and public decision-making and in other areas,  and family problems are no longer a taboo, especially gender-based violence and domestic violence. State and civil society are involved in a broad campaign to promote awareness of role of women which is reflected in drafting of new legislation on gender equality and domestic violence; drafting a national strategy already implemented; publications and ongoing programs in mass media, establishing and strengthening of structures central and local level in order to achieve gender integration, etc.

Empowerment, and perfection of legal and institutional mechanisms for gender equality, strengthening women’s role through the decision-making process, equal access to education, health and social services, elimination of gender stereotypes, customary traditional mentalities, domestic violence awareness etc, are the priority directions of Strategy for Gender Equality and Domestic Violence, which is supported by donor programs, operating in the country. Promoting, ensuring and protecting children’s right is also one of  the priority programs and legislative and institutional analysis undertaken by Albanian Government and at the same time constitutes the major objective field of respecting and protecting them in the context of protection of fundamental human rights.

We hope that updating the activities in this site, we will help all stakeholders in Albanian society which work to achieve gender equality, and to minimize violence against woman including domestic violence, anti-discrimination because of sexual orientation and protection of the children's rights.
