First meeting of the national council on gender equality (ncge),
The first meeting of the National Council on Gender Equality was held in the premises of the Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities (MoLSAEO) on June 3rd, 2009.
3-June-2009Purpose of the meeting: To have the first NCGE meeting convened and approve the Annual Progress Report on NSGE/DV for 2008.
The meeting was opened by Mr. Viktor Gumi, Minister of Labour, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities, who, after welcoming the participants pointed out the responsibility that law no. 9970 “On gender equality in society” charges the MoLSAEO with.
In this first meeting the minister of MoLSAEO presented the Annual Progress Report on NSGE/DV for 2008, the work done until now, main achievements and recommendations for improvements in the future. Some of the achievements in the gender equality policy include:
Strengthened institutional mechanism on gender equality and domestic violence through: a) the establishment of National Council on Gender Equality (NCGE); b) the new structure on measures against domestic violence; c) first steps for establishing the Technical Secretariat for monitoring the NSGE/advisory body for running, determining and DV d) institutionalization of the gender focal points at central and local level pursuant to law no. 9970 “On gender equality in society”.
  • Establishment and functioning of the cross-agency working group as an advisory body in ensuring gender statistics and determining harmonized gender indicators in support of gender equality policies and monitoring in Albania, in line with national and international commitments on gender equality at all levels of government.
  • Drafting of new legal and sub-legal acts on gender equality and against domestic violence such as: a) the approval of law no. 9970 “On gender equality in society”; b) the drafting of secondary legislation on the law no. 9669 “On measures against violence in family relations”; c) the drafting of secondary legislation on the law no. 9970 “On gender equality in society”.
  • Awareness raising campaigns all over the country on gender issues and prevention of domestic violence.
The meeting continued with the deputy ministers and representatives of the respective ministries reporting on the progress made with the objectives of NSGE/DV for 2008.
Civil society representatives, members of the NCGE, commended the DPEO on the achievements and the work done and pointed out that the role of education for girls and women should be balanced in order to achieve gender equality and prevent domestic violence.
After the discussions, all members unanimously approved the Annual Progress Report on NSGE/DV for 2008.
